Poker Jargon
Action Another term for "betting," that is, to start the action is to start the betting.
All-in Having all one’s money in the pot
Ante A bet required from all players before the start of a hand.
Back door A hand made on the end, which a player was not originally trying to make.
Bad beat Having a hand that is a big favorite defeated as the result of a lucky draw.
Bankroll The amount of money you have available to wager.
Blind Forced bets placed in the pot by the first two players in front of the dealer button, in Hold'em.
Button A round disc that rotates around the table to represent the dealer.
Call This is a bet that matches the current bet.
Check If no other bets have been made, you can check (pass), and wait to see if anyone else will bet.
Check-raise To check, indicating weakness, with the intention of raising after someone else bets.
Cold Call Call a raise without having already put the initial bet into the pot.
Come over the top Raise or reraise an opponent’s bet.
Fish The weakest player on the table.
Flat call Call an opponent’s bet rather than raising.
Flop In Holdém the first tree exposed community cards, which are dealt simultaneously.
Fold To throw your cards in and give the pot up.
Gut shot A draw to an inside straight.
Limp in Enter the pot by calling, rather than raising, another players bet.
Limper A player who enters a pot for the minimum bet.
Live one A loose, weak player with a lot of money to lose. A rich sucker.
Make a move Try to bluff.
Nuts The best possible hand.
On tilt Playing much worse than usual because you have become emotionally upset.
Rag ( or blank ) A card that doesn’t help you and most likely none else.
Rake The money removed from each pot by the house, as a commission.
River The fifth and last community card in Holdém.
Rock A very conservative player.
Trips Tree-of-a-kind.
Turn The fourth community card in Holdém.
